ONLINE End of the Week Learning Updates
So with every new week, comes new things to learn and tweak. We tried linking our classroom to the GOOGLE CLASSROOM Stream but that was a bust near the end of the week so I will be posting the MEET join code just prior to our weekly times. I sincerely apologize if it did not work for you this week. I have added next week's MEET times to the class calendar for both Room 2 and for Grade 5 Math. I know many wanted a scheduled time but it took some coordinating with classes and teachers. Hopefully this works for the time being:
Room 2 Homeroom Meet:
Mondays at 10:00 am (If Monday is a holiday, then on Tuesdays at 10:00am)
Thursdays at 1:00 pm
Grade 5 Math Meet:
Wednesdays at 11:00 am
Today, the students helped me with an online activity to increase our interactions when we get together. Here were the results of a web poll we did during today's MEET:
Again, a big thank you to parents, guardians, and older siblings for helping our students with this transition to online work. I know there are things that can be smoother and a bit more organized. It has now been over a month since we have not been in our physical classrooms teaching our students face-to-face. This is truly difficult to comprehend as I plan lessons to not only think about the potential learning obstacles but the technical glitches that our students may encounter in doing these activities in a new way. Your patience and understanding is very much appreciated. This week, the students and I talked about managing our time to vary our activities each day. So make sure to get out and get some fresh air too now that spring is hopefully here to stay.
One area many students and parents have acknowledged as a overwhelming is checking GMail daily and dealing with the EMAIL inbox. A quick tip is to delete notifications once you have read them and answer emails that need a response. Delete what you do not need to keep the inbox manageable. If you need some support or ideas for these, please let me know. I have also asked students to keep their questions for me in the Google Classroom through private message or email so that is more manageable for me as well.
I am going to switch from a beginning of a week communication on the blog to the end of the week posting. It will be a different way for me to communicate from what I have done in the previous 6 months because now I will recap the week and provide a week ahead look. My preference is to provide continuity and ease for the students as we are all dealing with our current situation in different ways. Again, please do not hesitate to contact me by email if you need any additional support.
ELA Current Weekly Work:
- Continue reading across the genres to reach their 40 book goal that we had set out at the beginning of the year. Forms and copies of their reading records are either in Google Classroom or in an email message.
- Weekly Reading Response to something they have been reading during the week. Students have been doing this all year and are now just transferring their writing into a Google document set up for them every week.
- Currents4Kids to read the assigned article and complete the quizzes and respond to a topic provided about the event they just read.
- Mini Lessons on specific content for poetry and figurative language will be upcoming lessons.
- Boggle- a continuation of the puzzle with 9 letters they have been doing for most of the year. Students determine the mystery word but build as many words as possible each week. This is a Google Slide set up for them each week.
Math Current Weekly Work:
(This is updated in each students' Math Classroom Stream. With four classes and four different teachers, if you require specific information, please email your child's math teacher.)
- Review of multiplication strategies
- Develop division strategies
- Practice and use estimation strategies for each operation.
Please stay safe and healthy.
