Fall Has Definitely Arrived

I have noticed people scraping their windows in the morning and there is definitely less leaves on the branches, so it is safe to say we are in our fall season. Please remind your child to have layers to be prepared for the weather each day. Many complained they were cold outside but did not have a jacket with them when they arrived at school.  In class, the temperature varies with so many bodies in one space so it is a good idea to wear layers inside too!

As you are preparing some mittens/toques and the like, if you come across a mini-gloves or two that have no matching partner, don't throw it out!  We could repurpose them into our whiteboard erasers. Just wash them and send them our way!

As we near the mid point of the second month, the students are preparing their Science Tree Photo Book that is due Tuesday, October 25. There is a sample of what their photobook slideshow should look like in the Google Classroom. In class, we have the materials needed to assist them identify their trees based on the photo evidence they took and will use for their project.  There will be a unit test as another way for students to demonstrate and communicate their understanding of the unit on Thursday, October 27.

Students have their log in information for Mathletics to practice and review concepts covered so far. This is a resource that can be used at home and at school. We are working with scales to create balanced equations (ie: 3 x 4 = 6 + 6) and solving an unknown variable for an equation (ie: 4 + b = 21, b= 17). Google Classroom also has some links and images from our class notes that are good for review and practice.  Students can bring their books home to show you their work but are asked to bring those books back each day to keep themselves organized.

Our class will be doing Scholastic Book Orders this year. Our dedicated classroom librarians will organize the order brochures that go out each month. This set is due October 22, but you can place online orders at anytime using our classroom code: RC238352.   All purchases under our class account give us back some bonus dollars that we accumulate and use towards books or different fun materials we can use in our class room.

As a grade 5/6 cohort, we are starting a small project to help the Calgary Women's Emergency Shelter as our SOCKTOBER event. We are collecting new items that the shelter currently needs, Essential Items List. We will be the stewards of this project to help get our whole school involved. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to email me.

The grade 6 students had their vaccinations today, so there may be some sore arms. Please do the daily health check to ensure your child is feeling well for school. We are hoping everyone can stay healthy and safe if we all do our part.
