Learning Conference with Parents and Students

Thank you for taking some time out of your schedule to meet with me by phone or through the computer screen on Wednesday and Friday. It is always a pleasure to talk about ways to support your child in their learning and to help them be successful learners for now and into their future.

As I discussed with many parents during the conferences, reading and writing are huge foundations for all student learning, progress, and while also developing their communication skills and creativity. It provides them with experiences, feelings, inspiration, and the list is endless. Each day, your grade 5/6 child should be reading for 20-30 minutes a day without any interruptions at home. Many of you have asked for a booklist to get some ideas for novels for this grade level. Students should always challenge themselves in their reading to use the written language to learn about themes, messages, and lessons the characters are going through. They should use their daily reading materials as inspirations for their own writing too! We will be doing a whole group novel study to help develop more reading comprehension strategies and writing tools to enhance both areas.

Students have access to their Mathletics account to provide them with practice and review of skills and concepts both at school and at home. Using this resource as part of a regular routine at home will definitely have longterm benefits and increase your child's confidence using the different math skills. Students were provided their specific login and passwords for this account during math class. If you require this for your home computer, ask your child to bring home their notebook or send an email to me to request this information.

Every day students should be bringing home a green plastic duotang/folder with their incomplete work, notices, and reminders written in their little notebook. This is a way students can develop their independence and organization of their work and materials well before going into junior high. This folder should be returned to school each and every day. Please check at home for notebooks and materials that have been provided for their learning in school but often seem to be misplaced at home from time to time.

This weekly blog will continue to have information for your child's learning in room 2 as well as information and reminders for our many great events at Capital Hill School.
