Taking Time to Remember

This week will be a short week so please double check the calendar!

Remembrance Day is November 11 so there will not be school that day. Our school will be doing a virtual assembly with some students in our class participating being an MC for the event or a wreath bearer. This year we created a legacy project to leave for the classes that come after us by making a wreath using poppies created by each student with some words to thank our current military service people. Thank you to M's dad for donating the stand for our wreath. A huge shout out to M, S, E, and H for giving up some of their recesses to put the final pieces together. I will post a picture of our class project after the ceremony on Wednesday.

Learning Conferences for parents, students and the teacher will be on Wednesday evening and again on Friday morning (NO SCHOOL on Friday). Please make a time to discuss your child's progress in Grade 5/6. If neither of these dates work for you, please email me with some times and dates that we can reschedule to meet. Report cards will go out in January, so this would be a good time to discuss ways to support your child in their learning prior to the end of the first term reporting period.

In Mathematics, students are continuing with their estimating practice using three strategies to help ensure their calculated answer is reasonable. They will be practicing using all three estimation strategies while learning multiple ways to multiply multiple digits by two digits. It is a good idea to continue to practice basic math facts to make this transition easier, faster, and more accurate. For the rest of month of November, the focus will be on multiplication and division. Grade 6s will review these strategies while learning to work with decimal numbers in their operations.

We have begun our planning and discussions for the CBE Minecraft Design Challenge. Students have been partnered up to create an important piece to Calgary's downtown landscape that will appeal to people of all ages, abilities, while incorporating elements of the indigenous culture and Calgary's history. Students are expected to record an explanation to their buildings and structures of how these will enrich the lives of future Calgarians. Here is the STUDENT GUIDE for this challenge. The program works from school on their assigned laptops.

In Science, the unit exam for the Trees and Forests unit has been released so you may review or look over areas of the test. As a class, we looked at exemplars of some of the student explanations for the second half of the test for the written responses. Our new unit will be, WEATHER! We will be doing some constructing of weather tools, so watch out for a list of supplies to hold on to before they get sent to the recycling bin!
