December Updates

Finally, some snow! It is definitely looking a lot like winter now. Please remind your child to dress for the changes in temperature and conditions. It is the perfect time to start checkin the weather reports each day as it is also our current science unit.

In science, students are learning about ways to watch, measure, and use tools to predict the weather in our area. They will learn about types of clouds, the atmosphere, and how humans interact and can be impacted by the weather.   They have been working on building a weather station with at least four different instruments built from recycled materials. This allowed them to test and create using a variety of materials. They will present their weather stations on Monday, December 6 with their partners or individually.

Students have been using their multiplication to help them to calculate area and determine perimeter for a vareity of quadrilaterials and other random shapes. Students are seeing a huge improvement with their math facts, so keep on practicing!  There are currently 9 students who have moved beyond level 1 before the end of the first term.  Students will be working on divsion strategies before heading into the winter break.

For social studies, we have moved from learning about the local governments to finding out how it is different from the provincial government organization and decision making.  There are links for reasearch and reading for information posted on their Google Classroom.

     **WINTER CELEBRATION Information**

The grade 5/6 students are planning to support KidSport Calgary and raising funds through our hot chocolate sales and bottle drive on December 10. We are also planning a winter activity time for all of the classes to participate in their cohorts. We are hoping for a bit of snow but some decent temperatures to be outside through out the morning. If you are available to volunteer your time to help with the crowd control outside/inside on Friday, December 10 from 8:30-12:00, or a portion of it, we would love a few extra hands. Parents with volunteer security clearance please!

Cereals for the Mayor's food bank drive have been steadily coming in! Thank you so much to J and family for sending a few boxes a day for over a week! Every little bit helps. There is also an opportunity to help out the Giving Tree to purchase gifts for families to help them out this holiday season.
