Details about December
Wow, we survived another deep freeze! Thank you to all the adults and students who helped to make sure everyone was safe in wearing their layers to and from school! Now we are above zero for a few days so make sure to get outside and take in the fresh air! Another reminder that students have a soft start at 8:15 and the morning bell is at 8:30, attendance is done promptly because students must transition to their math learning spaces. Student arriving after attendance has been taken, are marked absent until they go to the office to receive a late slip from Ms. Greene.
In math with my group, we have been working on multiplication strategies. Today we worked on how many seconds remain until Christmas Day-December 25. Here is our work:
There is so much going on at school and in room 2 this month. Please read the weekly emails from Ms.Wright to stay updated too! We know we have had many students and staff away over the past few weeks. Thank you for calling in to the absence line to record the reason and a quick email from those that are away a little longer. Please have your child sign into their Google Classroom for some practice work or project work they may have started and can continue on from home.
Our class has been doing an outstanding job bringing in donations to help the CalgaryVeterans' Food Bank. We have led both weeks' challenge with the other Grade 5 and 6 classes. We are collecting until December 16. As part of the winter celebration, all four classes will be part of the counting of items from the whole school so we will have a final count before we get the donation boxes ready for pick up that morning. All four classes will be involved in busking, taking in the entertainment with their reading buddies, as well as building/creating a structure with the number of donated items. The structure designs will be built that Friday to be shared visually with their peers and reading buddies at a later date. We only fit in so much on an early dismissal Friday!
Here is the donation items list:
Curriculum:
ELA: writing with emphasis on proofreading, paragraph writing, novel study for "Hana's Suitcase" and creating a story map in the visual journal. Ask your child to tell you about the novel so far, or maybe have them proofread a written list you may have written to see if they can spot the mistakes AND correct them!
Math: Operations and Number Sense with a focus on multiplication and division before going on Winter Break, problem solving using all four operations. Ask you child to show you their estimation and operation strategies they have been working on so far.
Science: Electricity and Magnetism is our new unit. Students have their vocabulary list in their duotangs to help them anticipate and develop their understanding of new words in science. Students are creating an information poster in Google draw to remind others to be safe around electricity.
Social Studies: Researching, creating, working together to present information about one of the designated physical regions of Canada. Ask your child about their region, what is their group's projects, what are they specifically working on?
Physical Education: We had an epic three period curling bonspiel to end our unit this week! Congratulations to C, T, and K for winning (super close game that led to a rock, paper, scissors showdown). Our current unit is basketball.
Reading is so important as I expressed during the conferences. Capitol Hill Library books are due back on Friday, December 16 so Ms. Pobee can get the library organized for when we return after the winter break. The Calgary Public Library will be open during the break, so if you need a great book-they are open! In the last blog post, you will find a link for some book suggestions.
Have a great week! Please email me if you have any questions or need clarification for activities in room 2.
